I know what it is like to be blessed with opportunities beyond my abilities and skills and to have success in ministry beyond my wildest imagination. I also know what it is like to freefall into an abyss from which I thought there was no recovery.
I know what it is like to spend a year on the sidelines in recovery after 25 years of preaching, teaching, writing, and leading.
I know what it is like to fall into a hole of depression for nine months that I just could not climb out of. I know what it is like to be physically and emotionally sick and to go months without a full night of sleep.
More importantly, I know what it is like to fall into the arms of God and spend a year discovering that the grace and mercy of our God is bigger than I ever knew. I know what it is like to discover that I have real friends who love me because I am Pete and not because I am “Pastor Pete.”
Above all, I know what it is like to hear the sweet whisper that “the God of all grace … after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you.” (1 Peter 5:10)
